Why do my armpits smell?

Armpits smell because of the bacteria that live on the skin and break down sweat into acids. Body odor usually begins to occur when a male reaches age 14-16. Obesity, spicy foods, and diabetes can all increase the chances of one having body odor. Each person has a unique body odor, and your body odor is influenced by your diet, gender, health, and the medication you take.

So what can you do about it?

Keep your armpits (or other smelly areas) clean, by washing them regularly with anti-bacterial soap. This will keep the number of bacteria in that area low, and thus, decrease body odor. Shower or bathe in warm water once a day, twice if it is very hot and humid.

Use a combination antiperspirant and deodorant. The antiperspirant will decrease the amount of sweat and the deodorant will make it more difficult for bacteria to thrive in that area. These can be bought in your local pharmacy (CVS, Walgreens, etc.).

Prescription antiperspirants are available, as well as prescription-grade products like Gillette Clinical Strength and Certain Dry.

Wear breathable clothing made from natural fibers, such as cotton, wool, or silk

Avoid spicy foods, as they can make sweat more pungent for some people.
